I just had an elm tree taken down in my yard and was wondering what I should treat the ends with before I have the log cut into boards. I know I’ve read this a number of times but cannot find where I read it. This is the first time I am trying to have boards cut from a felled tree. Sorry for the newbie question…

Andy,
Since it will take a while to get this would it make sense to use something that I may have around the house? Old paint, etc?Regards,

No, paint does not work well.
Use either the Anchorseal or a roofing tar. Howie.........
Buzz,Most will tell you that paint won't work well and it will flake off before long due to all the moisture trying to get out of the log. I wouldn't disagree. Temporarily, anything that keeps that moisture in the log will do. Personally I would not use roofing tar. I think my sawyer guy would have a cow about cutting into it and gumming up his blades. If you have it and want to use it I would suggest doing a fresh cut on the ends of the logs and then using Anchor Seal when you get it.Andy"It seemed like a good idea at the time"
Roofing cement works just fine. The can I've got says "emulsified asphalt." It smears on with a trowel, bonds to green wood, and is waterproof when cured. Every building store in the country carries the stuff.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the idea is to slow the mositure change, right? Last time I had some storm-downed pear wood, I used the wax from a broken toilet seal (unused, mind you). Kept it in the garage for about two years and it was fine.
Thank you all for the suggestions! This forum is the best!...Regards,

Buzz: Not to get off subject but I like that line from Mr. Bailie, I went to his website or some site that had other of his writings which I couldn't much understand, but that line says a lot. DukeKenneth Duke Masters

Dukeone,
I saw that line somewhere and really thought it was a great one. I haven't read anything by Mr Bailie but I am inclined to after reading that quote.Regards,
