Best type of blade for finish rip cuts
Hi there
I’m looking for advice on the type of blade to get for final ripping of smallish parts on the table saw. In FW 193, Mark Arnold rips small bandings on the TS using a thin kerf blade and my question is this;
Which type of blade, normal rip with say 24 teeth or more general purpose with say 40 teeth? My thinking is that this blade wont be used for day to day ripping, rather it will be used to make those final cuts on delicate pieces so I’m leaning towards a blade with more teeth rather than less given I want a better finish. Am I correct or should I stick with a 24 tooth blade and get on with it?
Thanks.

The fact of the matter is, if you want some really clean and precision cuts like bandings, you should step all the way up to an 80 or 90 tooth blade. You have to remember that when you start to cut fine thin pieces like banding you always run the chance of that small thin piece of wood being damaged or chunked out of the saw. Remember too that the more teeth you have the longer the sharpness of the blade will last and when a blade starts to get dull, there is moe drag on the lumber. A good 24 -40 tooth blade is fine for your initial cuts when etting started but when you get into final precision cuts, a fast really sharp cut is critical.
Ok so given that I don't have to worry too much about the cutting height and given your advice on the number of teeth, would a 190mm or 200mm blade with 60 teeth be about the equivalent of a 254mm 80T blade? My simple maths tells me it's about right but not sure.
Then is a thin kerf that important? I mean what's the practical difference of a blade with a 1.3mm kerf as opposed to one with a 2.2mm kerf? Of course I'm referring to cutting delicate parts now.
Is this process just not simpler on the bandsaw?
Thanks for the reply.
The Freud Fusion would be my choice, especially if you are doing small pieces. I like having as many teeth as pratical in the kerf at any particular moment but still not overload the gullets. And the Fusion does it. with having 40 teeth.

This is the blade I use, and love it.
Thanks Bruce.
