Hi there
I am new to woodworking and have been making a bookstand/book rest for my mum. The back which supports shelves has a hole type handle at the top, to move the whole piece when required. I cut the hole out using a fret saw, tidied up by paring with a chisel and have put a chamfered edge on using a chisel. Is there a more neat way to achieve the desired result which is a handle which is comfortable. It is a long octagon, ie the ends are shorter and made of three “steps” , there are no curves, so I guess that rules out our routers. It is made from 22mm oak. Any ideas most welcome.

A router following a template can create any shape, straight edged or curved, the only limitation is that inside corners can only be as sharp as the radius of the router bit. Once the cut out is made, a small bearing guided round over or chamfering bit can be used to break the edges.
