I’ve just started gettting serious
about woodworking and could use some
help. My last batch of wood came
from Lee Lumber at Pershing and Halsted
I’ve went to Horne and Wood World and
looked around. I’m wondering who has the
best deals on what. If anyone in the area
has any advice please let me know. Thanks.

Good deals on anything in metro Chicago, will be about as likely found as ashtrays on motorcycles. Just finding good hardwood timber is a challenge. That said, the most common source for a woodworking hobbyist would probably be the Owl Hardwood Lumber Co. Look them up on the web for their locations. There are others but they are higher priced and have very limited selections. More typically, I will take a road trip with my piggy bank and try to find some better quality / pricing at outlying small sawyers and buy ahead of need. If they have nice walnut, I buy walnut...qtr sawn oak, I buy qtr sawn oak. Sure enough, if you need a specific species for a project, they will have just sold 200 bf of it yesterday to a guy who is building a cherry treehouse for his 3-year old.
I need more wood and less tools.

I have purchased oak, cherry and Brazilian cherry from Hardwood Resource right by the Home Depot on North Ave but, as Handrubbed said, there are no good deals to be had in Chicago. The selection at Hardwood Resource is not always that great either, especially if you are looking for really nice boards. I have been to Badger Hardwood, which has somewhat more reasonable prices and better quality, and I have heard good things about Kettle Moraine Hardwood. Both are in Wisconsin, but just barely.
Hope that helps.
