I’m replacing a bunch of piano hinges in the grooming sheds out at the barn. drop-down doors to small cupboards for brushes and other grooming stuff. These are sheltered areas, but open in front, and they double as washing areas for the beasts.
I can get brass (plated probably) piano hinges reallllll cheap at Home Depot, but I’m wondering if there might be ones made for use on boats or something that would be better made and resist the dampness better. Anyone know?

You can buy piano hinges made from stainless steel. Rockler and McMaster-Carr sell them, and probably most boating-supply places do too.
Check hardwaresource.com. I got some from them, and they were very reasonable. You can even get them undrilled, if you have some specific hole pattern
Thanks, guys. I'll try all of those sources, compare and contrast. I'm seeing some aluminum hinges too. I've had so-called stainless steel rust. What are your thoughts on aluminum??forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I have some aluminum hinges on a copmpost bin in the yard, of course they haven't rusted but thay have become discolored with a white build up (probably some type of oxide). They don't look very nice but are functional and are exposed to rain, snow, etc. all year long.
hello . there are different grades of stainless steel over this side of the pond.
316 grade should be o,k but 304 is for internal only.( I think thats the right way round, the old brain is still suffering from turkey and alcohol excess)
all the very best to you all for the new year.
regards teabag,
Yes, that's the right way around. Type 304 has good corrosion resistance, and will generally be fine outdoors except near the ocean. Type 316 has even better corrosion resistance and will work just about anywhere except submerged in sea water. In either case, you may see a little rust over a long period of time, but it shouldn't be enough to compromise the integrity of the material.

Thanks for the clarification. I'm feeling a little better armed with information. After the 1st, will venture out and see what I can find in this area!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl, I'll bet you have a West Marine store near you. If so, you should find some in stainless or bronze.

Gary, thanks! I'll hit the Yellow Pages.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Jamie, Look for hot dipped, or zinc plated hinges The ammonia fumes will eat up brass plated and aluminum hdwe. ED
What ammonia fumes? This isn't in a stall, it's a grooming stand and occasional washrack.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
The horses have diapers? . Lots of fumes around live stock (dogs/cats/etc.) Stein
Yes, there would be strong ammonia smell in a stall, especially if the horse is one of those aggravating ones that never goes pee outside when s/he can get inside an christen the fluffy shavings on the floor. But in a grooming shed or washrack the horse is only there for short periods of time, and most of them will cross their legs for awhile before urinating on a cement floor, what with all the splashing and such.

Gurl, do the mares put the seat down?Speaking of crossed legs, my dear wife resorted to that practice, when her 'Rhythm' method failed her many times.

Go for 316 if it fits your budget, 304 second. These 2 are non magnetic and do not rust. Confirm the grade with your supplier. This will be a one time purchase for you.
Stay away from the 18- series often found in pots, pans and cutlery.

Thanks, Dan, I'm checking them out now.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
FG,
Here's another source. I've found this place to sell high quality stuff, but for these kind of dollars, I would still check the grade. Whenever you combine the words "stainless steel" and "marine", it's probably wise to take someone to revive you after learning the price :)
