What kinds of wood are good for birdhouses? I’ve read that redwood and cedar resist rot, but cedar is toxic to some animals.
In case it matters: It’s for a winter roosting box, so there will be only adult birds, no nestlings.

I've used cedar for outdoor birding and can't say i've ever seen or experienced any known "toxic" problems. Cypress is another alternative though a bit pricey.

Since you have experience: What are your favorite woods for birdhouses?
Is it true that winter roosting boxes should have the entry near the bottom, to trap heat? One website says that the birds (bluebirds, in this case) form a pigpile at the bottom of the box, so the entry should be near the top.
