A friend told me about a relative of his cutting a maple tree in their sugar bush. When asked why he had cut a tree that they tap for maple syrup he said that his father-in-law told him that the tree had bird’s eye lumber in it. Is it possible to look at a standing sugar maple and tell if it is bird’s eye?

Thanks for the info. Neat website also. I couldn't get page two to load but I'm still going to our sugarbush to see if there are any of those $50,000/mbf trees.
THANKS fer the post.. never saw that before..
I have never cut down any to find out,but several years back after I had gained access to a lot of this wood I decided to do a little research, and after contacting several so called experts I was informed that you could not tell by just looking at the tree. They stated that it was mostly just a shot in the dark.So my trees are still standing except for one that fell on it's own.So then I cut it up and found nothing.I found nothing special.

You were misinformed. I mill maple all the time, and can definately tell, and I'm no expert. I was taught by a guy who has been milling for a long time, and I'd say he's an expert. I'll try to post some pics of the exterior of a log to show you the telegraphing of birdseye maple to just underneath the bark. I have some out in my woodshed, I just don't know if the pictures will show it, and do it justice. It telegraphs like bubbles just underneath the bark.

Hi and thanks for the update. All I did was search areas that were supposed to know what they were talking about.I am certainly no expert on this subject. So I am always open for advice. Will take a look at the pic's and thanks again for the update.
