I am in the process of doing some test pieces on a birds eye maple box. I have read about( and will test) using water based dyes and such, but was hoping to get some feedback l on what has worked well for you all. The box is basically used to hold stationary and what not on a desk, so it won’t get much wear. I would just like to make the most out of the figures.
Thanks for sharing your expertise!

If you want to maintain the natural color of the maple, a fast wipe with boiled linseed oil followed by wiping completely dry will "pop" the grain. You can then topcoat with whatever you want after the linseed oil has cured about 3-5 days.
If you want a less yellow cast to the wood, use "Pure" or "100%" tung oil thinned with naphtha. Do not use a product called "Tung Oil Finish". However, tung oil, even thinned takes considerablly longer to cure so overcoating is delayed.
Try it as one of your tests to see how you like the look.
