My father recently gave me his old (30 yrs or so) Stanley bit brace. I would love to put it to work but need some bits obviously. Didn’t see any in Lee Valley. Saw some in Garret Wade but they seemed pretty expensive. I realize you get what you pay for but does anyone have any other suggestions? I am trying to build a decent and quality set of hand tools. Don’t care if the brace isn’t the best. Its value is based on history.
Thanks

You can try Irwin Tools. I have their 13 piece boxed set of auger bits, 1/4 to 1 inch in 1/16 inch increments(item 43699). Paid $30.00 for it at a yard sale. All but one had never been used. Happy with the one bit I used once and the box looks really impressive in my tool cabinet.
If you go to the Irwin site, you can find a list of their distributors. Also a Google search will find other sources for this item. The Irwin set should be far less expensive than the Jennings bit Garrett Wade carries. However the Jennings bit looks to be a high quality item.
Try Jon Zimmers antique tools site. He has several selections of auger bits at various price levels. Excellent service and fast delivery.
ebay - collectible tools. there are almost always sets listed plus individual bits.
Another vote for Ebay. I got two sets of original Pre Stanley Jennings auger bits in the original box for less than $100.00 each. They were barely used, it looks as though they were never filed.
I only wanted one set but I bid on both, lost one, won the other and then got the first on a second chance offer at a good price.
Contact me if you want to talk about buying the second set.

I am very interested. They look in very good shape. How do we proceed with me taking one set off of your hands. Let me know.
