I just bought>800 bf of black locust. I am building a portch and wanted something other then pressure treated. I was going to use IPE but it was about$3.20 ftsq. The locust was $.50 a ftsq and it was 6/4. The boards are 4-5.5 inches wide. The 8 footers are for the portch. The 6 footers are to be milled into 3/4 t&G for interior flooring.
Has anybody out there tried this before? I found a mill that will do it for me pretty cheaply.I don’t really like milling huge quantities of wood.
I was thinking of sanding the portch down flat and then puting some sort of oil based finish (CFW) on it. I don’t think I should use a film finish. Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Frank

From what I have heard about Black Locust it will outlast the house! I have heard that black locust and Alligator Juniper fence posts in the ground for fifty years are still holding in cattle. It should make a beautiful floor, inside or out. The oil finish sounds great.
