Since the St. Louis Cardinals won the world series , some one is selling signed bat that they say are made of Black Maple.When I frist heard this I thought the bats were just paited black, but the anounser said they were made of Black Maple. Has any one ever seen this kind of wood or does it go by a different name, and if so were do you get it.

There is a tree called a black maple that is a close relative of the sugar maple but it's wood is the same light color as the other maples. I believe that the black bats used in the game are a dyed ash. There are very few truly black woods, ebony being the only one that is commonly seen, and a bat made out of ebony would cost a small fortune at its current price.

Acer nigrum - Black Maple, John is correct, nigrum is extremely similar to Acer saccharum - sugar maple, often called Rock Maple or Hard Maple.
Believed to be more drought tolerant in the states on the western edge of its habitat. It may also be dyed, stained or painted. Ron
