Use "India Ink" or Speed Ball Ink it's pretty much the same. You can buy it at just about any art store. The ink is used for drawing but works great on wood, pretty sure it's non toxic.

I just talked to to a luthier who said he used shoe dye to make ebony blacker.
I have used black leather dye from my local Hobby Lobby.

Waterbased analine dye is available in black.

Hi All!
First post on this forum.
Have always used HVLP sprayed on alcohol-based black aniline dye in a custom shop cabinet situation where time matters. It does not seem to get any blacker if more than two coats are applied?
Finish with clear water-based acrylic lacquer, or whatever else you prefer.
Cheers!

I've had good luck with the method Woodshop Guy uses. Very black, yet you can still see the grain.
I have used this aniline dye on a couple of projects. The black is very black!

I found the black analine dye very dull and seemed to lose the wood grain.

Even after finished with Shellac I was not happy with the finish. Finishing is an artform I need to keep working at. I was making Craftsman style pegs for the four corners of a full size door. I knew I should have used Ebony, but could not find any at the time in my area.
Thanks for the tip.
That brand from that source has been my favorite for years.
