Hey everyone,
I’m making a simple large lazy susan for my wife out of a ~20 ø black walnut cookie. Out of all the work I’ve done, I’ve avoided end grain projects out of a combination of fear and laziness.
What would you folks suggest for prep and finish on something like this? My initial thoughts were to seal with a shellac and sand smooth, then finish with a regular oil poly for a matte to semi-gloss finish. I toyed with the idea of wood grain fillers, but I don’t want to mess with tint. I’ve also thought about epoxy to establish a smooth surface, but that might result in a nightmarish amount of sanding.
Any thoughts? I’d greatly appreciate it.

My last cookine was a maple oval for a deer mount. It was 4-years dry. I soaked it (router-flattened surface) with danish oil a few times and left it for a month. From there I went belt sander to 200, and ROS to 320 and almost a polished surface. Finished up with sealcoat, then poly.
