Folks,
I have acquired a Stanley #81 scraper-the one that looks similar to the #80. However it is minus the blade, and the blade for a #80 is not suitable.
The question is -can I get away with cobbling up a blade using steel from an old panel saw? Or is there an alternative ? Card scrapers are too narrow (least those that I have) and not wide enough.
Looks like the ideal size would be 4″x25/8″.
I attach a “before” picture, pending a makeover.

Hi Philip,
Use an old saw blade - cut and filed to size.
Cheers,
eddie
Thanks Eddie,
Ihave just the right thing waiting to be used. Should be very easy , what with those thin cutting disks for angle grinders- a new thing to me ,of great potential.
A friend here has introduced me to Australian Wood Review magazine-had only seen some others which were not great. I think the A.W.R is a really good one-makes me want to nip across ....
If you want a bit more rigidity, try an old table saw blade.
The new flexible cutting discs for you angle grinder work well and seem to generate a lot less heat (and waste) than the alternative ridgid cutoff wheels. I have used these very successfully on 2mm+ hacksaw blade.
I ended up using a z knife from an old Wadkin trenching tool-aprox.1/8 inch.
Cutting disc=Norton -tremendous item- ate it up like corn off the cob-and no heat to speak of.
It works less aggressively than #80 because you can't flex the blade, but still takes wispy shavings wiht a clean cut.
