hi all, hey got a paint question for you veterans out there. i am repainting my entry door on my porch,a french door, one side is fixed. the finish was a stainand assuming old poly bvut can’t be sure. decided to paint in exterior white. sanded it almost down to bare the finish was chalking pretty good so sanding went easy. when i primed it the primer was turnig a yellow tint. I was assuming the old finish was attempting to bleed so i second coated it looked good, when I applied the paint as it dried it looks yellowed instead of white. looks like the hold out on the primer wasn’t enough. now my question is how do I correct this? do I let dry and re-coat or do I wait for it to be dry then sand and prime again? I don’t want to build up too much. the trim which was already white but yellowed looks great .so the yellow door must be the old substrate. any help? (temp 63 when I painted)

Try some Bullseye 1-2-3 primer from Zinsser. Sand the door down to remove any gloss, apply the 1-2-3, then the top coat.

To stop bleed through, you use a stain blocking primer. Kilz is one brand, you can also use a white pigmented shellac such as Parks. These and others are available at most paint suppliers. If you want to do it right, get some paint stripper and start over, this time using the correct primer. It won't take much to strip what you have done since it's fresh. Personally, I wouldn't consider any short cut methods, they may cause additional problems.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
i was afraid that I may have to do that. I had some killz from my kitchen cabinets, but a used another can that was just opened, it wasn't the killz. big mistake. I never thought this door was going to bleed. it was only stain and a little poly,l ooks like it may have been refreshed with a gelstain. i was gonna buy the zinnsser but i thought it was over kill the finish on the door did not seem so bad,(MY BAD) now I hope the weather holds up to re-paint. the can says 50 degrees to 90.
