I just put a coat of BLO on a small maple/walnut box I made from some scraps. I want to keep that soft, in the wood finish. I have a couple questions. Will it do any good to apply multiple coats of oil? If so, how many? How long should I let it sit between coats? Do I need to sand between coats?
Would you put anything over the BLO? I’m debating whether or not to put on one coat of Minwax wipe-on poly satin.
Thanks, I’ll post photos when it’s done.

If you want an in the wood finish don't put varnish over the oil. You might put a couple of coats of oil/varnish mix, such as Watco over the oil in lieu of additional coats. This would give a bit more durability expecially with respect to moisture spotting than the BLO but look quite similar. You should wipe off any excess just like you would do for the BLO. While BLO takes quite a while for a complete cure, you can apply additional coats after drying overnight. You can sand between coats with 320 or finer sand paper. While it is possible to wet sand using the finish itself as the lubricant, I wouldn't recommend it in this case, since it would make it harder to keep the walnut sanding from staining the maple. Sanding while dry allows cleaning off the sanding dust before applying the next coat.
