I have seen many combinations using BLO, can I use BLO, mineral spirits, and Deft lacquer instead of varnish? I like the Deft product and I am curious to see if it can be used instead of varnish?
Thanks,
Mike

If you're asking can you apply BLO diluted with mineral spirits, then apply lacquer to the "cured" BLO surface, the answer is yes. Just make sure you give the BLO several weeks to cure (it never really does completely) after applying it. And wipe it as dry as possible at the end of the application.
No, the thinners in lacquer are not compatable with the mineral spirit thinners.
Thanks for the info.

Are we talking about mixing all the ingredients together at once or applying the BLO/mineral sprits first, then lacquer over the cured BLO?
Mixing them all together will not work, but my first explanation will.

I recently refinished an antique saw handle (it's a user relax everyone) and I applied two coats of BLO with 0000 steel wool after each coat and only gave it a couple days to dry and then applied two thin coats of Deft from a spray can and it has held up nicely so far, doesn't feel to bad in the hand either!

EDIT: I reread the first post after hitting post and I think I misunderstood. I dont know if you could make a finish out of all three mixed together, sorry.

I was curious about mixing all three together but I know I cant, what makes varnish compatible and lacquer not when mixing them together?

Varnish and Linseed Oil disolve in solvents such as mineral spirits, Naphtha, turpentine. But Lacquer does not. It needs "lacquer thinner," a mixture of ketones, acetones, toluene, xylol, etc.

Thanks for the info, I wasnt sure why but your explanation makes sense!
