Does Stanley have higher and lower end classifications for their block planes? I have been looking at the 9-1/2 and the 60-1/2 and am finding a huge pricing discrepancy. Amazon and woodcraft is at $45 and up and Highland Hardware and my local farm store are at $29. If there is a difference, what is it?
Thanks,
Eric

Those cheap Stanley Block planes are all over the flea markets. Imported/ knock offs
You'd be better off buying a good old block plane for 5/6 bucks and cleaning ,sharpening and oiling it your self. Look for Miller falls/ Stanley/Sargent/and yes, Craftsman.
Take the time to check for lost parts/cracks/ not enough 'Meat' left on the 'iron' (Blade) etc.
These are fine examples of American tool makers long gone.to their reward. Where are the Chinese/ Taiwanese/Mexicans gonna go?(Besides California and Canada!) Stein.

They are the same block planes at Amazon and Highland. I just purchased a 60 1/2 from Highland. Veritas has them at about the same price as Amazon. Highland lowered their price just as a get you in the store techinique. At one time they were more expensive their too. I drop in there about twice a month.
The 60 1/2 is not a LN, but with a tune it meets my needs of trimming mitres, plugs and end grain. I did flatten the sole and add a longer blade cap from an old Record 09 1/2. A few other adjustments and it works fine for my needs.
Stein is correct about they don't have the quality they used too.
