I’ve read many articles on finishing cherry. Gel stain seems the way to go on smaller projects but on larger ones a wash coat might be a better option. We use laquer sanding sealer for the wash coat cut 50/50 . My fear is that this is not the correct cut.
Any thoughts on this.

This mixture sounds like a good way to start. Make some samples. This will take the fear out of your work.
If you find the 5050 mixture doesn't look right, try a 60 40 or 7525 mix.
Everybody has a different hand in application. You have to experiment a little to find what works best for you.
