I’ve just finished a birch entertainment center with 2 coats of boiled linseed oil, and after a few days (in my not so warm garage shop), it’s still not fully absorbed. Both plywood and hardwood haven’t fully absorbed the oil, and I’m wondering if it will even out with another coat, if I should let it sit for a week while I’m away on a trip, or if I should try to buff it out with paste wax, with which I plan to cover the oil.
Any ideas?
Thx, Rob

If what you have on already hasn't dried, I would not advise putting on more. Let it sit. Did you wipe the oil fully off each time you applied it? If you left a residue, it may end up just gummy. One thing you can try is to wipe it vigorously with mineral spirits using a gray scotchbrite pad followed by wiping dry with fresh paper towels. Then let it sit for a while. It should dry down. Don't put any more oil on it until the stuff that's on there is fully absorbed. A BLO finish is applied with very, very light coats over a long period of time. Then it must be constantly renewed every month or so for a year and every year after forever.
Don't wax it until the BLO has cured.
Makes sense; thanks Howie. I probably didn't wipe it off well enough, so I'll let it sit for a couple of weeks while I go on vacation.
Aloha!

Rob,
I'm doing a French Polish finish that was described in FWW some months ago. It starts with a BLO and then you wait 7 days or it to dry. So I'm waiting...
