I am going to build a rocking chair and ottoman. I have the plans, but can anyone tell me or quide me to a website, on how to figure the total board feet that I will have to buy.

I have found from 30 years of experience that if you calculate the board feet for each component , total all the components then add 30% if select & better grade wood and if there are knots etc, 40% extra is more like it. I am assuming you are going to use rough sawn lumber. If you start with an 8 foot board you may have to throw away 6" from each end due to cracks etc, thats 12.5% right there.
Thanks. I will be using rough sawn oak. Looks like I have some cipherin' to do.
Good honest post..EXCEPT if I was doing it.. I make ALOT of scrap...
Trapwood, you want to go to http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/tabulator.htm

Thanks, I will check out the web site.
Lets start with the basics. One Board foot is 12" x 12" x 1". The same board, 12 x 12 x 2 equals 2 board feet. This is based on rough lumber. If the first board has been planed and surfaced it is now aproximately 11" x 11" x 3/4", still considered one board foot.
The problem you present is much more dificult to figure without seeing the plans you want to work from. You will most likely need some 1" rough stock for some parts and 2" rough stock for legs / backs and rockers. Because rockers take up wider boards, you will probably need 50% more of the 2" stock than your rough figures and 25 - 30% more of the 1" rough than you figure. This does not add in extra wood for grain/color matching. If the seat is going to be solid like a Hitchcock seat you may need some 2" rough to make the seat. If it is a seat 'frame' that will have a padded seat or a caned seat, you're talking 1" rough.
Hope this helps with your problem. SawdustSteve
Thanks. It is a glider rocker with an ottoman. The plans are all 1x lumber. I have my work cut out for me, so guess tomorrow I can start planning.
