CHISEL ,
There is , and that is part of what a timber cruiser does before they bid on a logging sale. They measure the diameter of the butt , the length of the trunk and the diameter of the top of each section .Sorry I do not have the formula readily available.
hope this helps dusty
Howdy Chisel The local sawmill here in Kansas uses the Doyle scale to measure board feet in logs. They even printed it on thier bussiness cards. Pretty cool. It sure comes in handy when going out for timber. Helps to decide what is worth cuttin and leave standin. If you want one get me your mail address and I will mail you a card. I hope you and your family have a good new year.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Howdy Chisel. I sent you a card with the doyle scale today. Should be there shortly if the pony express can get through all the snow and ice. I live in Kansas, remember. Hope this answers your questions, it sure has helped me a lot. Best of luck with your upcoming projects.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE ARE PRESENTLY HAVING A VERY WINDY FEW DAYS AND LOTS OF RAIN. THE TEMPERATURE HAS BEEN BETWEEN 63 AND 78. SHOULD CLEAR UP IN A FEW DAYS. CHISEL
