Don't know if this would help, but there are many plans "out there" for bookshelves shaped like boats -- it got to be a real fad. Perhaps you could modify to create a coffee table instead.

If you don't find any plans for the bookcases, LMK and I'll dig one out of my magazine stack!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-) Do unto others as you tell them they should do unto you....

I saw one at the Wooden Boat School Dorm that was very well constructed. I thought they might have a plan but I couldn't find anything on their site. The above site has plans that you might be able to adapt. You could alway just buy a set of boat plans and build a 1/2 or 1/4 scale. The Wooden Boat Magazine Store has many high quality plans.
Post a photo if you decide to build one.

I've built a few stripper canoes that were worthy of being coffee tables when I was finished........ But, I just took them out & used them for camping, fishing, & hunting. I've even been known to fill them up with field-dressed moose and drag them accross beaver dams. ;-)
