hello to all. a friend of mine has purchased some bocote for trim on one of his projects. he just thought it was a great looking wood and i had to agree with him on that count. to me it felt as if it had an oil in it. having read that some woods need a pre glue wiping with a solvent i was wondering if this might be such a wood. any help would be appreciated. many thanks bob

The pre-wiping is a good idea with oily stock. One of the best glues for oily stuff is Resorcinol. You may have to search a little to find it, as it's not at the big box stores.
From experience with bocote,it is even more important to have a fresh surface for gluing.Within a half hour of gluing your friend should make a pass over the jointer or with a handplane.I've found that using this method makes for a stronger joint.

my thanks to you and Boardman for the quick response. do you have a recommendation as to a wipe for this. i was thinking in terms of alc. or laq. thinner. thanks again bob

Resorcinol is a “purple” adhesive which may show at the glue line. Do not use where such a color is undesirable.
I would wipe the wood with acetone and then use a two part epoxy such as West System Epoxy (or equivilant)
I use acetone to clean the wood and Excel One glue.I've also used LV GF2002 on bocote with great success.Remember to get that clean cut edge before gluing, and leave your assembly in the clamps for at least 24 hours if you use the LV glue.
