Janet, I've never built one but after a quick Google search of images, I don't think it would be terribly difficult to build one. You could adapt a bench screw or a couple of pipe clamps to do the heavy work. If you need a plan, I could probably do something for you.
It's the wooden screw that I am wondering about. How do you make a screw out of wood?

Do you have to have a wooden screw? There are tools for cutting threads in wood if that's what you want. Check out these links for examples.

There are others as well.
Most of the antique book presses use iron or steel screws threaded through cast-iron supports. You could make a wood support and these screws that are often used for veneer presses:

Wooden screws aren't as strong, of course. Dowel threaders (dies and taps for wood) can also be found at Japan Woodworker:

But, one should expect to exert a lot of force on wooden threads.
