Rick, this site should help: http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm
Thanks for the sagulator & the Idea of double thickness.............Later Rick
Thanks for the info. Bill
Are these adjustable shelves? Can you also add a support pin in the back. If they are fixed, can you add a cleat or fasten the back to the shelf? There are always some unknown issues with shelves. One is the weight that they can be loaded with, another is the strength of the particular lumber you use and, of course, the effect of time on the shelf. One thing you can count on is that they will get loaded to the max and eventually sag. At 40" with no extra supports, I think I would go with a double 3/4" thick shelf and 1 1/2" edge band. It will be a long time before they sag and they can be flipped if they do. Better to be a bit overbuilt in this case.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match

The spring 2005 issue of Woodworking Magazine (F & W Publications, Inc.) has an extensive article with results for different materials on just this subject.
Their website is http://www.woodworking-magazine.com. I picked it up at the local bookstore. It's a pretty good magazine with no advertising, just woodworking.
