Hi Folks,
Just started working on this cherry burl slab that was given to me. I made a cradle out of some 2″ thick styrofoam insulation I had in hopes of providing a sled with which to pass the piece through my new toy – Performax 16/32 drum sander.
At this pint I have belt sanded most of the chainsaw marks that were left by someone who attempted to slice it and gave up. Hmmmm, I wonder why! 🙂 It sat in the woodshop for nearly a year now and I removed most/all of the bark that was hiding the beauty underneath.
The face, ready for the drum sander
I’m thinking of slicing it in half, making some supports for books and then spraying it with clear laquer to allow the natural color of the cherry as it ages. Maybe I’ll donate it to the library for all the help they’ve extended to me in my pursuits of fine woodworking.

Some of them trenchers were made such that you could eat another course using the other side. That might a bit much for this one. :-)
All in all though methinks it will make a better pair of bookends.
I have showed it to several folks and it's interesting to hear what people see in the live edge side. It took me several hours to get the bark off. I used a small head screwdriver for the bulk of it which worked rather well. I used a screwdriver so as not to gouge into the live edge.
Oh yeah, and for all you Craftsman advocates, that's their 3x21 belt sander with 33 years of mileage on her and still going strong.

Nice Bob,
When you're done, share some pics with us.
See you September.

Since I decided on turning it into some bookends I've been trying to think of how it could be more than just bookends.
For example, if I hollowed out the flat side into a bowl kind of shape it could be used as a coin dish. Haven't come up with anything yet that says, Yeah that's it!
Lookin forward to getting together in Sept.,Bob @ Kidderville Acres
