There’s a plan in this month’s Woodsmith for bookends that I’m considering making as a present. The body of each bookend is made of 5 ea. 4.5″ x 3.75″ x 3/4″ (thick) pieces, face-glued to make a block. The author uses MDF, partly because he chose paint for the finish, but also to eliminate movement as a possible source glue failure.
It seems unlikely that solid-stock pieces this small would, when finished, move enough to cause glue failure. Any opinions on this? I would like to try the design using solid wood.

Assuming you don't use green wood you can't have glue failure due to creep with pieces this small.
Are you going to use 5 pieces? Seems to me that if you get 8/4 stock you could use 2 pieces and have almost the same thickness, and the solid wood would have a better "look".
