I would like to remove the paper backing on paper backed veneer (it is Not pressure sensitive adhesive paper) so that I can make a bookmatch. The veneer is crotch mahogany. Is there an effective (and hopefully easy) way to do this without damaging the veneer?
Thanks, Allen

Sorry for the delayed response. I've never worked with paper-backed veneer but from what I know of this material, the back is not designed to come off. It's like trying to remove dried masking tape from a wall months after you've painted a room.
Try going at it with a scraper to see if that removes the paper without damaging the veneer.
I'll do a little more research and get back to you.

Mat, Thanks for the reply, and I appreciate you checking into this. I understand the delay, and hope you had a great Labor day weekend.
The "paper" backing has a texture like cloth; is bubbled and loose in some areas and easy to peel off; in other areas it seems to be adhered very well. The veneer is crotch mahogany, and the area that is adhered best is the area of the crotch grain. Clearly it has to be removed to use the veneer, as it would not support a credible bond.
So far I have tried scraping, water, alcohol, acetone, "goof off", and paint remover. The only thing that seems to work for me is paint remover. I have used an orange oil paint remover and that works.
I hope to find a solvent that will be effective.
Thanks again.

Mat, I also tried heat which works, but not very well. It is slow and warps the veneer.
