Do you know of any good books on China cabinets (also called a hutch board)? I’m in the early planning stages for one for my home. I’ve scoured the FWW articles and have a found a few good examples. I’ve done image searches on the internet. Plus, my dad and brother have nice examples in their homes. Ideally, I’d like to find a book with lots of examples/images for inspiration. Many thanks for the help.

You don’t have a period style in mind then?
At this point I don't. I'm partial to Shaker style furniture but I want to look at a variety of different styles to see if inspired by something else. The China cabinet my brother has in his dining room is Shaker so I am good on that style plus I have about a dozen books on Shaker furniture so plenty of source material for alterations.
Whenever I watch a movie I always pay attention to the furniture because I’m fascinated by period decorum. There are many movies showcasing period furniture but Meet the Parents comes to mind because everyone’s seen that movie or Midnight in Paris. The series Downton Abbey is probably the best example off the top of my head.
There aren’t many books that I know of that are type specific except maybe clocks. Google is useless for general searching since it’s been raped for tracking & media purposes.
I don't know of any book specifically on China cabinets. You'll have to look through books on different periods and styles. There are tons of Shaker books that will have examples. It was a popular piece in Arts and Crafts and related types. Colonial furniture books loved some China cabinets.
Would "Kitchen Think" by Nancy Hiller be helpful to you? Lost Art Press. Lots of tips on designing and fitting to your unique space.
Thanks all for the feedback. I do plan on getting Kitchen Think. For some reason, I hadn't thought of that.
I built a shaker china cabinet that is on the popular woodworking site. Look under projects and find the multi drawer cabinet. In there, you will find the cabinet byGlenn Huey. Great project and my wife loves it.
Good luck.
Hi Dale,
I've spent the better part of 30-45 minutes looking for that article. I can't find it. Any chance you can upload a photo of your shaker china cabinet.
I found this image taken from a screenshot of a Highland Woodworking Episode with Glenn Huey. Is this what you were thinking of? It's very pretty for sure.
Joe, I live on the other side of town from you. Let me know if you want to look at the china cab.
Thanks Dale. I will look up the Popular Woodworking as mentioned. Very well may take you up to see it and would bring along the wife. We all know, it matters more that she really likes it than me.
