I’m looking for a book or books that covers all types of finishing from modern to very old methods. I live in a wonderful house built in 1917 with lots of built in wood furnishings. I want to re-finish them correctly (and hopefully become an expert at it to avoid mistakes). Can anyone please help me? John

Understanding Wood Finishing by Bob Flexner, published by Rodale.
MARK RODERICK
*Flesner's book only covers finishing new woods, there is hardly anything on REFINSHING old stuff. It is a great book otherwise. I am still looking for a good book on refinishing.......ANYBODY?
*George Frank has two books on finishing, including lots of stuff on older methods. One is "Adventures in Wood Finishing", autobiographical but lots of good tips; the other is I think just called "Wood Finishing". I couldn't tell you if they are in print, but they are considered classics, and Frank is a master. he has written a number of articles for FW. Their collection of articles "FW on Finishing "(or something like that), has some great articles.
*Bob Flexner's book will give you a very good background on modern finishing. It's the only accurate and reasonably comprehensive book that I've seen on the subject, and I use it for training people (Thans, Bob.) It took me about 20 years to come up with about the same outlook as his.Jeff Jewitt has a good book on hand applied finishes, also quite good, and deals with traditional finishes. There's an interesting book on wood finishes called The Complete Manual of Wood Finishing, by Frederick Oughton, ISBN 0-8128-6236-8. It does NOT seem like a book written by someone who has "done it," rather more like someone who read a lot of books & compiled them. Nonetheless, it has some good info in it, once you have absorbed the first two books. Speaking as one who does it for a living, the only difference between finishing and REfinishing is the stripping, and maybe dealing with old stains and damage. Is there really a demand for more information than what's currently available? Maybe I should write a book......To me, the most interesting challenge is finish restoration, bringing a damaged old finish back to its original character.Michael R.
*John... there are a lot of books out there, here's three more to try.CARE AND REPAIR OF ANTIQUES Thomas H OrmsbeeTHE ART OF RESTORING ANTIQUES Michel DoussyFURNITURE CARE AND CONSERVATION Robert F McGiffin, Jr. (one of my personal favorites)The 1st two selections deal with all aspects of antiquitiesb but do have some good sound chapters on wood. Robert is a proffesional conservator and his book is extremely technical.....great reading though.
