I am looking for a book with detailed descriptions of types of woods, their uses and identification. Most that I have seen so far are minimal in the “real” information department but have great pictures. The more detailed and comprehensive the descriptions the better. I have heard The Internation Book of Wood (1976) is a good read. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

A book by Bruce Hoadley called Understanding Wood is a pretty good resource on the characteristics of most woods .
World Woods in Color by William Alexander Lincoln is excellent.
A good price on it at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0941936201/qid=1103028194/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-6098976-6559828?v=glance&s=books
There a publication by the Architectural Woodwork Institure, Hardwood Selectorama, which gives color photos of just about every wood available and also gives some of the physical properties. Constatines sells it, and I think you can purchase direct from AWI.

Steve, Bruce Hoadley has published two books that might interest you:

Not a book and not that easy to use, but it's free.

I've got the Lincoln book too and generally like it, but I think it's about time for an updated edition. Seems to have a few too many missing species.
The Hoadley books are excellent.
What everyone else has said plus Know Your Woods by Albert Constantine Jr. No longer in print but available from used book places, like Amazon.
