Amazons Tool Crib offers some pretty nice router packages from both Bosch and Makita. Plunge bases, cases, etc, etc. It’s not for me. It’s for a buddy who’s an aspiring sign maker. My gut is to go with the Bosch. Makitas package is a little more enticing.
Any Thoughts,

I have the makita RF1101 router, not the plunge base. I am really happy with the fixed base router. My father has the Bosch router kit and he seems to like it. As with most routers, look for positioning of the on/off switch, where the release mechanism is for the plunge lock and the collets that come with the unit. I have heard (tool reviews from magazines) that the makita plunge base is not as good as others, but for the purpose you mentioned, I would think that it would do fine. The makita is not too noisy, has a soft start, comes with two collets, has a micro adjustment, has a lot of power, and there is a manufacturing plant in Georgia. I am not as versed with the Bosch brand.
I was dreading a response like yours because like I said I was leaning Bosch.
thanks

I just bought the Bosch package with the 1617VSR and fixed and plunge bases. Be aware that Bosch has two packages; one variable speed and one fixed speed (if that is important to you). I needed a router for large panel raising bits. After buying a speed control unit for my 3 HP Makita, I discovered it wouldn't take a 3-1/2 in. bit.
I really like the Bosch. Seems very well thought out. Features like the variable speed, micrometer depth adjustment (which works very well in a router table) and the quick release clamp are very useful.
Any reason why you are counting out Dewalt's new combo. pack?
No. I haven't seen it advertised. The Bosch and Makita were featured prominently in a recent issue of tool crib and the prices seemed fair.
It is definitely worth a look. Two models - 1 3/4 and 2 1/4 hp. Both have soft start but I believe only the bigger of the two has variable speed. I bought the 2 1/4 a couple of months ago and love it. It carries forward Dewalts smooth plunge mechanism. I believe you can get the 2 1/4 for about $250, if not less.
The new issue of American Woodworker magazine (the router issue) has a review of four router of the plunge/fixed base routers.
The Bosch won.
Just an FYI, i've never tried any of them.
FWW also ran a test about a year ago and the Bosch was "the One"; I bought a Bosch package but I have used only the plunge router and then not much. I found nothing that was a problem; well done unit.
thanks boys
