Almost 1 year ago I purchased a Bosch Router (1617evs) kit with the fixed/plunge base. This was a very large investment for me. It has been used less than 6 times, stayed in the case in the garage (never below freezing) and used gently with dust collection hooked up. Went to use it today and it now makes a crackling sound with an occational high pitched shriek that is terrible to hear. I am assuming that, after only 6 uses in about 1 year, the brushes or bearings have already went. THis is much less than the duration listed in the instructions. Have others had these problems and if so, what was the solution? I will be calling Bosch tomorrow but, with almost mathmatical precision, the one year warrenty went out about 2 weeks ago.
Thanks – Tom

Bosch is usually really good about standing behind their stuff.
When the waranty has expired, remember the customer service rep has some latitude about helping you -- or not. If whoever you talk to first is hesitant, ask to tell your story to the manager.
It sounds like you are just getting started in wwing, so be nice, and remember it would not be inappropriate to remind them you are at the beginning point of your tool-buying life.
BTW -- first call the national help line, before taking it to a local service center.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I have heard great things about Bosch, which is why I went with them for the router. I hope they live up to their reputation.
Tom,
You don't mention if the noise was occurring while you were routing something, or if it was happening just when the tool was on.
I have a series of Bosch routers, and the only time I've heard them scream, is when a bit was plunged too deeply into a cut. This occurred on a very oily and dense tropical hard wood. A lighter pass and less pressure into the cut makes the noise go away.
With the crackling, do you also see an abundance of blue sparks from the top of the motor?

No - I dont see the blue sparks. However, the screaming noise is whenever the motor is running. I even took the bit out and the motor out of the base to limit the possible causes of noise. I spoke with the Bosch people and so far they have been very helpful. They are living up to their good reputation. Now, lets see what they do with my router and the warranty.
