Bowl Turners: which bandsaw and blade?
Here lately I have managed to scrounge quite a bit of fresh felled local wood to use for turning bowls. When roughing the blanks on my bandsaw, it seems underpowered when trying to cut through the wet thick wood. My saw is a 14″ 1hp Delta. Eventually I am going to upgrade to a 16 or 18″ saw, which will also be used occassionally for resawing. Just wondering what saws other turners use, and recommendations for an efficient blade for roughing out bowls. Thanks GP

It depends on how big the bowls you're turning are. For most bowls a 3/8 or 1/2 blade with 2 - 3 tpi and a wide set is what you want. You might not be able to find what you want in stores, so give someone like timberwolf, lennox or doall a call. These guys will be able to get the proper blade for you.

I've been using a 3/8 bimetal blade from Lennox that works pretty well. The big problem, depending on the kind of wood you're cutting, oc course, is the blade tends to gum up pretty fast. My Delta 14" is the 3/4hp machine and it could use more power, to be sure, but patience serves well. It will get the job done.
Originally I bought a Lennox 3/8" carbide 3tpi skipped tooth blade which worked extremely well. But these are very expensive - you can buy several bimetal blades for the cost of one of them. Plus nobody around here sharpens them so when/if they get dull, it's very painful to have to toss them out!

I haven't used it, but Suffolk Machinery says their AS series Timberwolf blade is made for just such an application.

Ditto the comment about gumming up blades. I use a 3" 2 tpi Hitachi resaw and cut tangentially to approximate a circular blank. The 3" blade is not ideal and naturally cuts about a 100 yard radius!
I've had lots of gumming up with various wet woods, especially some cherry that died of gumosis. It gummed the blade really quickly, but was sublimely beautiful with black streaks and great color. I use simple green (as discussed in FFW) to remove the gum.
