int’d = interested 😉
There’s been some recent interest in the Box Joint Cutter, first introduced by Freud last year (Freud SBOX8). Sounds like there’s a Forrest on the market too, for more money, LOL. I finally set up a jig this weekend, so if you’d like to see how it cuts, you can take a look here. Any tips on fitting these will be appreciated. I think they might be a tad tight for actually gluing. Note the lack of “bat ears” in the close up (2nd pic).

Nice looking joints. My real interest is in the jig you used to make the cuts. I have been in the process of collecting jig design ideas and building one for myself.
Cheers Greg
The jig is pretty simple to make and there really doesn't seem to be much variation in box joint jigs unless you make and adjustable one, such as the one from ShopNotes:http://www.shopnotes.com/plans/box-joint-jig/
For mine, I just made a tall fence that attaches to my Incra miter gauge head, and followed the instructions that came with the SBOX8. Several people have suggested using a dedicated sled instead, gluing the key to both the fence and sled, thereby preventing any movement that might make the joints uneven.
Where my first jig went wrong was getting the distance between the two slots (the key slot and the cutting slot) wrong, which meant the joints didn't fit. I still need to adjust that a hair so the joint isn't quite so tight. It doesn't take much of an error to throw it off.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thanks for the reply and the link. I've made my share of single purpose ones in the past and have been thinking about creating a "proper" adjustable one. Yes they are pretty much all the same, I just wanted to combine the best features all into one. Greg
I just got referred to another adjustable one, here's the link if you're interested.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Thanks FG this was actually the model I was using as a starting point.Happened to come across it in a friends PW collection the other day.Cheers Greg
I'm thinking about making one with a "secure-able insert" that would have the two slots in (key slot, and cutting slot) which could be swapped out depending on what you're doing. Really don't want to be making a separate fence for each type, LOLL.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Kind of what I am thinking of too if I understand your post. I don't have my FFW stash in front of me but there was a reference to something like that arrangement. If you like I can send you the reference.Greg
Jamie, what is the max width of cut that cutter can do in one pass or in other words how deep a box will it make ?
And do bat ears= break outs?
And what is the origin of the word "Petutka" ?Philip Marcou

Hi, Philip. "Bat ears" are what you get if you use a dado head with ATB configuration. The SBOX8 is a flat-top grind, so the grooves are perfectly flat in the bottom. As Charles mentioned in another thread, you could use it to make 1/4" or 3/8" grooves too, but it wouldn't cut cross-grain very well.
It's an 8" blade set, so however deep that goes.....
Petukas -- hope I spelled it right, LOL. The backside of your lap. It's a singular word -- most of us only have one. ;-)forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
forestgirl, looks very good.
I also have tight joints using router jig and 1/4 inch bit. They fit together very snug and with addition of glue may swell to the point that they will not fit. The only solution I can come up with is to fit the joint until it is almost closed before adding some glue.

"The only solution I can come up with is to fit the joint until it is almost closed before adding some glue." I'll try that. I'm also going to adjust the distance between the two slots to make the "tongues" a half-hair smaller. forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
