Friends:
I have some Bracht chisels and gouges, bought from Leichtung 20 years or so ago. Ihave only given them light use until now, but they have done well. Anyway, out of curiosity I tried to find reference to them here and in google. Found a few, but very few. Seems the company was bought out by the group that makes Two Cherries
Does anyone else have Bracht chisels? Any thoughts on long term performance

Joe,
About a month ago, I bought a set of 8 "chip carving" knives on EBay that are made by Bracht. I did a preliminary sharpening, and made some shavings just to test them out. So far, so good. Next thing is to see how well they hold an edge.
I bought a set of Two Cherries carving gouges about 35 years ago. They are very very nice.
Let me know the experience you have with Bracht. I also am working on finding out where they rank on the quality scale. My guess is that they were neither at the top nor at the bottom. I hope we hear from others.
I will continue to monitor this thread. If you find out info from other sources, please let me know.

Just out of curiosity last night I looked on Google. Aside from auction notices from ebay and eslewhere, there are limited references. A few guys say they are excellent, and one did not like the alloy. If I recall correctly, my set of 5 chisels cost in the neighborhood of $80 when bought from the old Leichtung catalogue back in the mid 1980s. I don't remember the cost of the gouges.
Like you, I will be interested to hear if others have had experience with them.
BTW, There is an article available in PDF on this web site about making a tool cabinet out of birch ply. It looks to me as though the cabinet has a set of Bracht chisels in it.
Joe,
Thanks for the quick reply. Thanks for the info on the cost of the chisels. We'll figure out how good they are in the next few months. Then maybe we should do a joint paper or at least a posting on the quality of Bracht chisels and knives. Let's hope we hear from others.Do you live anywhere near Washington, DC?

Right down the road from DC, only about 1300 miles (Dallas). I used to live in Bethesda with my parents, though, and then as an adult myself rented a house off Mass Ave on the Maryland side (right about where Little Falls meets Mass.), and then for a while in the District followed by a stint in Burke. Left there in 1978. Still have lots of friends from high school years who stayed, though.
Joe,
You left here in 1978. I got here in 1979.
There must have been a cosmic force at work!
Have fun in Dallas. Say Hi to JR for me.

Bracht Chisels
Hi, I have been using a set of 6 Bracht chisels for about 40 years. They have held up well. I often think of buying a newer set but then I think why since the Bracts have done everything I have asked of them. They were a gift from my wife and I do seem to remember receiving the Leichtung catalog ibn the day so that is perhaps where they were found. A google seach led me to this discussion. Looks like there are at least 3 of us. Joe
