I am working on a small box and I am having a hard time finding #4 screws 3/8″ long. I would like to have the screws in steel for the pre-thread and then brass for the finish screws. The screws that came with the hinges are too long. I would also like them to be phillips drive. Do you know of any good hardware supplier for screws that small. I already tried lee valley and woodcraft.

I'm not Asa, but found your screws on the McMaster-Carr web site http://www.mcmaster.com. Search for screws, then drill down on wood, #4, 3/8" length. You might consider adding this web site to your woodworking suppliers. I'd lubricate both types of screws before driving with one of the commonly suggested materials. Just my two cents.
I suggest beeswax for screw lubrication. It is compact and has no moisture (as soap will) to degrade the wood. Woodcraft stores strategically keep their display at the checkout counter.

Aren't toilet bowl rings made of beeswax? If so, they could be attained at any hardware, plumbing or home supply store? I melted one down some time ago for this use but don't have a lot of experience yet.
