Hello All,
I recently built a top (34 x 70) for a mahogany pedestal desk that I’m working on. I built the top a couple of months ago and am finally ready to finish it. However, I noticed that the breadboard ends are now a slight bit shorter than the width of the main center section. I’m assuming this is a result of the expansion of the center section.
My question is this: should I bother to try an sand everything flush again or can I expect that this expansion will be an ongoing thing and just finish it as is? Can I expect that the center will contract somewhat now that the warm weather is here again (I’m in Canada)?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

That is normal movement. I would not try and sand it flush as it will continue to move.

The center should expand in the summer (humidity) and contract in the winter (central heating). Some people make the bread board ends proud so they always are wider than the center section. If you can't hide it flaunt it.
I had the same experiance. It's a good lesson about the nature of wood.
Okay, thanks everyone. I'll just move forward with the finishing.
