I use pegs to keep breadboard ends in place and tight against a table top. I use a round file to elongate the holes in the tenon portion of the top to allow for wood movement. The method works pretty well but asking if anyone has a better method of making slotted holes in the rabbet.

I've used a router, simply because I can ensure the slot is parallel.
Minor point, probably not that important, but I have had gaps open up with sloppy slots when filing across grain.
Yes I agree on the joint opening up when slots are not cut well. Reason for my question and thanks. I think a trim router would work well and will give it a try.
You don't need much of a slot, and lengthening one with a round file takes less time than it took to type this.
You could get fancy and buy a 6" Auriou rat tail rasp. That would be the ultimate hole shaping for something no one will ever see. But still, you'd know . . .
