I made some progress on a shaker tabletop with breadboard ends today. The main field of the top is some fabulous curly cherry. Here are some pics of the process.
I glue only the center mortise. The client requested that any dowels not be visible so they are installed from the bottom. The breadboards are fitted with a slightly sprung joint. In other words there is a slight gap at the middle before gluing and clamping. This helps ensure the unglued ends will sty tight. The end dowels are also slightly drawbored with a slotted hole in the mating tenon.

Very nice! How much of a gap do you use/recommend in the center?
I don't really know exactly. A few plane strokes so maybe 1/64". Tom
