Thank you for your time.
I had to turn to someone, but i was all alone in the shop!
I bought a new marples chisel (3/8), spent ten minutes sharpening it (waterstones), put the tiniest of micro bevels on it, took it to the bench, put it on my line (in poplar) hit it with a hammer, and the bevel broke in half!
so, is it hard on bench chisels to mortise with them, or is this just flook? Does this have to do with the cheapness of the chisel? If so, what would be your pick for a standard bench chisel set?
thanks again, adam

Hammer as in metal or as in wood mallet? I think it was just a fluke. I would mention it to the retailer but sounds like a bad chisel. I have had good luck with Marples. I think they offer good value and in most cases perform very well.
i also ( in my short time) have been very satisfied with my marples. Thank, you
It does not surprise me that the chisel broke-
1. the bevel angle that comes on those chisels is way too shallow (or long) a bevel to be hitting on it with a hammer- or a mallet. Shorten it up and you should be fine.
2. those are pretty low end chisels- they should not break on you (return it to where you bought it) but don't expect much from it- you get what you pay for and if you are buying a set of 4 chisels for around $40.00 then what do you expect? I am not too impressed with most of the chisels that sell for more than $40.00 each! I have some Marples chisels in my school and they work- but they do not hold an edge very long.

good to know. I've never tried any better chisels. Do you have any recomendation for your preferred brands of mortise, butt and pairing chisels? It might be time to upgrade. (!) thanks
