OK, just broke off a 1/8″ drill bit in a piece of mesquite. How the heck can I get it out? The hole was only a pilot for a larger hole to follow. Perhaps I should just go ahead and drill the new hole, ignoring the catastrophy which has befallen me? Seems unlikely that the larger bit’s point will track the pilot hole with the old bit in it . . .

Dan, just drill a 3/16ths hole next to the broken bit and then push the broken piece into it with a suitable punch, then glue in some wood and re-drill.
There are all kinds of fancy extractors but they still leave a hole to be filled.
You can also have a rush of blood to the head and use a hefty nail punch to push that bit right in.....
@3% happens, but it must never be allowed to flow uphill.
Dan:
Check out the thread on broken screws. I'd say the split pin trick would work for a drill bit just as well as it does for a screw. Give it a try.
