Broken Side Wing on a #4 Bench Plane
Hi
Can you still use a plane if one of the side wings has broken off?
The plane doesn’t look like it was used very much and there’s little to no rust on the sole.
I don’t have the piece of the wing that broke off.
Look forward to your input.
Regards,
Kevin

If it is flat with the lever cap tight it should work fine.
That sounds good. I'll set up the plane and see how the lever cap sets up before spending time flattening (I've never gotten an old plane that didn't need some flattening).
I'll make sure to flatten the plane with the iron/chip breaker and lever cap set properly.
I guess the risk is that when resetting the iron/chip breaker and lever cap after sharpening, the sole may flex slightly differently and not be as "flat" as before.
Thanks for the input!
Time for a new plane...........
If you don't have a scrub plane, which doesn't need to be nearly as flat, this might be the prefect candidate without additional work. Just camber the blade more and you are good to go.
