What is your preferred method of applying stain? I’ve used brushes and cloth, never sponges, and have found pluses and minuses for both.

Depending mostly on the size of the project, I prefer to use either a cloth or to spray the stain on and then wipe it off.
Regards,
Kevin
I don't have a sprayer so I like to use a brush - I use the rag to wipe it off
Old T-shirts work best. (everything else costs money.)

Agreed. By the time they make it to the rag bin they've been washed enough to remove most all of the lint. I carefully remove the armpit sections though to avoid any chance of adding a color shift to the stain. (grin)

another little tool that works slicker than snot on a doorknob if you've got miles of stain to put on is one of those wool applicators on a wood handle. You can do a raised panel door in about a minute. Or all the trim in a 1500 sf basement in about 15-20. They cost about ten bucks. But worth it if you're going to be doing quite a bit.

I use those sponge brushes for stain. they work great except you have to be careful to only dip the first half inch or so in the stain because it will loosen the adhesive holding the foam to the handle almost instantly.
For liquid stains bristle brushes and rags are ok, but gel stains work differently. Because of its composition gel stains works great with foam brushes or sponges. This article describes some different types of brushes for staining more deeply.
I use brushes and its great..
