I have had elongated ‘bubbles’ show up after first coat of BLO.
I am making a 32″ DIA Lazy Susan for my wife using Alaskan yellow cedar. It was sanded up to P220, I flooded the turntable with water, wiped it (and any sanding residue) and allowed it to dry overnight and did a light sand (P220) to remove fuzz.
I applied two coats of CNW Pre-color Conditioner with a very light sanding (P320) between coats, allowing 1 day drying in between.
After dyeing the turntable to her desired color with Lockwood water-based dye and 1 day of drying I applied a first coat of BLO..
The following day as I was applying a second coat of BLO I noticed 2 places where elongated ‘bubbles’ had shown up. I am positive these weren’t there before the first coat of BLO.
If anyone has experienced this wood and this behavior, I would like to know what happened.
After a little discussion, I think we are going to go with the “hand-made” defect since re-finishing will take a lot of effort – and she has another more-favored project for me!

bubbles
I would expect it is moisture under the BLO that is trapped and still venting out of the wood.
