I’m building a hutch where the top is separate from the carcass below it. What are some strategies for attaching the top half to the bottom?
Thanks

They are often just 'trapped' in molding on the base unit's counter board so the top can be lifted off and transported separately.

If the hutch top sits on top of a countertop I fasten the countertop to the bottom of the hutch .
My last one had a ridge on the base of the top that sat in a groove. If it was tall and I had small kids who were likely to climb, I'd use pocket screws through the back of the base, which is what I have on two-part bookcases. For anything tall and heavy the top section should really be fastened to the wall at the top -- toppling bookcases have been known to kill.

Typically, the upper unit sits on the top of the lower unit. Slats are run up the back, attached to both units. Traditionally, they are wood 1x3+- and don't show when it's against a wall. Place them so you can get a couple of screws into something solid. If using a thick back, it can extend down and attach to the lower unit. Often a foot is placed on the ends of the upper unit. Furniture pieces like a hutch don't usually get attached to a wall.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
