i am getting my workshop ready to work out of. it is a old house that we gutted out next door. we worked on the rafters so it wood be self supporting with out inner walls. now i am going to build a back door. 4feet wide using 2×6 pine for the stiles & rails and raised panels. my question is. on the panels i was going to cut a 1/2 inch grove in the rails and stiles and use two panels back to back. is this a good idea or is there a better way.

There was an article on making large exterior doors, in one of the Fine Homebuildings.
Basically it was an exterior grade plywood core with the rails and stiles attached to it in a glued and screwed sandwich style.
It looked good and would be an extremely solid and stable assembly. Were I building one, that is the direction I would take.
