Does anybody have any idea where I can find designs for the wooden parts for a metal lee valley tail vise guide? I was hoping for some instructions coming with it, and I have never built one before- I have flipped through my various mags and haven’t found anything.

Check FWW #162, April, 2003, pp 50-56. It shows the whole process.
Good luck on your project. POst pictures when you're done.
Most importantly, have fun, but work carefully.

I built one a few months ago and the Lee Valley directions at first seem cumbersome but after a couple of times reading them it went well. Badger Pond had a short article on the vise a few years ago. See Wood Central and go to Articles and I believe you will find the article(Wood Central absorbed a lot of the Badger Pond stuff when they quit).
I really like the vise but I have some adjustment problems that are easy to fix but a pain. One side racks out of alignment from another which I guess is to be expected with two bench screws. I dont kike the plastic cover so I do not use it. The last comment I will make is I think it is very important to design the bench after you have read the instructions to make sure it fits your design.
I have the wood and the hardware, and I know how the base will be built, but haven't started because I dont want to even think about having to cut the top due to ignorance on the vice.
I hesitated a little also but realized if it was not right I could change it. I just glueed two 4/4 maple boards together to form one of the jaws and did the same procedure for the other jaw. The diagrams in the instructions give you the right clearences to determine the height of each jaw. I think it came out to 6 inches. The back jaw I attached to my bench top using biscuits and lag bolts which I counterbored. The nuts for the vise skrews were attached to this jaw.The handles were attached to the other jaw. The instructions are pretty straight forward after a cou;le of readings. I especially like the whidth which in my bench is 28" which is also the depth of my bench. The vise is very solid. I also put a Record vise on the other end. Since I am left handed the placement of this vise is backwards from what most vice placement looks like. It does make a difference for us lefties.Good luck.
Here, this should help ...

I had a similar question, so emailed Lee Valley customer service who sent me the two files I've attached.

The Scott Landis workbench book also has pretty good pictures and description.
