An acquaintance asked me to build a leather-upholstered ottoman. I decided against it, but it got me thinking, I don’t think I ‘ve ever seen an article or book that went into the details of designing and constructing the frame and foundations for upholstered furniture – sofas chairs, etc. The few references I’ve seen are mostly about stuffing and attaching the covers. A quick look at my semi-cheap sofa tells me that nails screws and butt-jointed pine are common, but there must be a fine woodworking way to do this. Any thoughts? Good idea for an article?

Norm Vandal Queen Anne Furniture (Taunton 1990) has detailed plans for constructing the framework of two easy chairs of the wing back I suspect it would provide background that could be transferred to other styles. Definately not of the slap together style of some of today's industrial products.

We used to be able to watch these episodes on line but now I think you will have to buy the DVDs. I think these are important enough to buy them. He does have some good tips, shows the tools you will need and says where to get supplies and what to buy. The end results that he builds and the upholstering looks quite nice and I am overly critical.
An another thing
